“Unlike beaches or even coral reefs, most people will never see a seamount, but this study shows that they are clearly one of the predominant ecosystems on the planet,” said Peter Etnoyer, Ph.D., principal investigator of the study and marine biologist at NOAA's Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research. “We can only hope that through this study, people begin to realize what a vast unknown the ocean represents, and what a vital role it plays on Earth.”

Although researchers have thoroughly explored some 200 seamounts and mapped and sampled a hundred others, this study is the first to estimate that more than 45,000 seamounts dot the ocean floor worldwide — a total of roughly 28.8 million square kilometers or an area larger than the continent of South America. The discovery was made possible using satellite altimetry data that measured incredibly slight changes in the sea surface height that, along with statistical analysis models, indicated the presence of these submerged mountains.

“Seamounts are biodiversity 'hotspots', with higher abundance and variety of life forms than the surrounding seafloor,” said Tom Shirley, Ph.D., contributing author of the study and a conservation scientist with the Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. “In fact, new species are observed or collected on nearly every submersible dive.” Two dozen new species of corals and sponges, for example, have been collected from seamounts in the Gulf of Alaska since 2002.

Seamounts not only make up the largest area of ocean habitat, they are also highly productive environments that can serve as habitats for important commercial fish species like orange roughy and sablefish.

This research, which is the first-ever comparison of the size of oceanic and land habitats, is featured in the journal Oceanography.

Chokeberry–a bright-red and dark-purple fruit rich in antioxidants–may help protect against weight gain and keep blood sugar in check, according to a new animal study.

For the study, researchers focused on a group of rats with pre-diabetes (a condition in which blood sugar levels are abnormally high, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes). For six weeks, the rats drank either pure water or water infused with high levels of chokeberry extract. At the end of the six-week period, researchers found that chokeberry-fed rats weighed less and had less body fat than the animals that drank pure water. Compared to the control group, the chokeberry-fed rats also had lower levels of cholesterol, blood sugar, blood fats, and inflammation.

Chokeberry is high in anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant also abundant in natural remedies like bilberry, tart cherries, and elderberry.

Late-Night Snacks

мая 1, 2010

Q: Is it true that eating too late at night can make you gain weight?
I've been told to avoid any snacking after 8 p.m. because whatever I eat will
turn directly into fat.

A: “This is a myth,” says Barbara Rolls, PhD, a professor of
nutrition at Penn State University and author of The Volumetrics Eating
Plan.
“In a large survey of 1,800 Americans, there was no association
between the extent of evening eating and weight change over a 10-year
period.”

In another study, she says, overweight women who ate 70% of their calories
either before noon or after 7:30 in the evening had no difference in their
amount of body fat. So this notion, which a surprising number of people believe
to be an easy weight-loss fix, is FALSE. You don't have to put a padlock on the
fridge just because the sun went down.

Rather than watching the clock, focus on your food choices. “It's what you
eat, not when you eat it,” says Rolls. The only exception: There's a pretty
strong consensus that you shouldn't skip breakfast when trying to lose weight
– or ever, really.

Fill your menu with what Rolls calls “low-calorie-dense” foods, such as
fruits, vegetables, soups, and other choices that pack minimal calories per
bite.

ISIS Pharmaceuticals and Genzyme Corporation have announced that their newly developed drug, mipomersen, appears to be effective in preventing high cholesterol levels in individuals with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. The results of this phase 3 trial were recently published in the journal, Lancet.

Familial hypercholesterolemia is an inherited condition that results in very high cholesterol levels. Individuals with this condition often have very high cholesterol levels early in life, and are at higher risk of suffering from cardiovascular complications and death earlier in life than individuals without the condition. Mipomersen, which has been under development for a while, works differently from other cholesterol-lowering medications on the market. The drug inhibits apolipoprotein B, a protein that makes up LDL. Apo B levels are often high in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, having high apo B levels may cause heart disease if not addressed.

In this study, 45 individuals were assigned to receive either a subcutaneous injection of mipomersen 200 mg weekly or placebo for a total of 26 weeks. Individuals taking mipomersen saw a drop in their LDL cholesterol averaging roughly 25%, whereas those taking placebo noted only a 3% drop in LDL cholesterol. Other outcomes, such as lowered triglycerides, VLDL, and apolipoprotein B, also appeared favorable compared to placebo. Common side effects included injection site reactions and an increase in liver enzymes in some of the participants receiving mipomersen.

Although this study doesn't tell us if the mipomersen can help prevent any long-term cardiovascular risks, such as a heart attack or stroke, it does suggest promise in lowering dangerously high cholesterol levels associated with this population.
